Mapocho Train Station – Santiago, Chile
The Estacion Mapocho train station is adjacent to the Mapocho river, viz the river that divides the capital of Chile, Santiago, in two. The name of this place first came from a native of Chile who named it Mapu Chuco, which means “water that penetrates the island”. The construction project of Estacion Mapocho was led by an architect named Emilio Jéquier, together with the construction of the Santa Lucia Hill park and the Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts. The project also aims to celebrate Chile’s century of independence in 1910.
The architecture of the Estacion Mapocho train station building can be a strong testament to another beautiful architectural design that also resides in Santiago. More interestingly, the exterior design of the Mapocho building reminds many people of the ancient European building architecture. If you are interested in visiting, Mapocho can be visited bypassing the Cal y Canto metro station. In addition, the location is close to other tourist destinations, such as La Vega and Mercado Central.

Luz Train Station – São Paulo, Brazil
The Estação da Luz train station is an important landmark from São Paulo which is precisely in the Luz area with a building area of more than 7,500 square meters. This building was originally designed by Baron de Maua in 1867. However, it was rebuilt by British architect Charles Henry Driver from 1895 to 1900. The new building design is built in the Victorian style, namely the neo-classical architectural style, where the exterior design resembles the buildings of Westminster Abbey and Big Ben in London, England.
The reconstruction process of the Luz train station was carried out in a different country. Initially, the building was assembled in Glasgow, UK. Then it was disassembled again so that it could be easily shipped to São Paulo. The hope is that this building can function much more efficiently than the previous buildings that have been around for more than 100 years.
The Luz train station was completed in 1901 and has since been used as an entry port for Japanese and European immigrants, as well as an exit port for Brazilian coffee exports. Today the building houses the Museu da Língua Portuguesa, an interactive museum that explores the languages that have influenced Brazilian Portuguese. Apart from that the museum also offers training, public lectures, consultations for linguists and language teachers.
The most interesting part of this one train station is definitely the towering clock tower, marking this building as one of the tallest landmarks in the city for quite some time. Constitución Train Station – Buenos Aires, Argentina
The Constitución train station was built in 4 stages during 1800-1900. The architecture of this building is a mix of neo-classical and victorian architectural styles which has 14 train lines. In a matter of days, approximately 500,000 passengers visited.
The Constitución train station is 2 km south of the landmark Constitución area, Constitution Square. The architectural style of this building is a tribute to various periods. The French style of the façade first appeared in 1883 in the baroque architectural style of the castle buildings in Maisson Laffitte, France. Then in 1923-1925, a magnificent main hall was built using materials sent from Liverpool, England.
Júlio Prestes Train Station – São Paulo, Brazil
The Júlio Prestes train station is a historical landmark located in the center of the Luz area. Júlio Prestes is also a historical tourist destination. The original building of Júlio Prestes station was completed in 1875 which was later used as a coffee exchange. Increasingly intense coffee exchange activities forced the Sao Paulo government to build a railway that was named Sorocabana.
In 1925, the Júlio Prestes building was renovated by an architect named Cristiano Stockler. The architectural style of the new building takes its inspiration from the Grand Central Station building in New York. The renovation process took 12 years which ended in 1938. The new building is 26 meters high with a total building area of 25,000 square meters.
Júlio Prestes is popular for its 1,000-square-meter concert hall. The concert hall is named Sala São Paulo. Sala São Paulo is now the venue for several orchestral groups to perform. Uniquely, this concert hall has a movable ceiling, so that the acoustic sound quality produced in the room can be optimized at will.
Desamparados Train Station – Lima, Peru
Desamparados is a train station located in Lima, Peru. In the 20th century, Desamparados station was one of the world’s greatest train journeys. The name Desamparados is taken from the name of a church called Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados. Desamparados development was started in 1890 by the Peruvian Corporation. Then 3 years later, the Lima-La Oroya route officially opened, now better known as the Ferrocarril Central Andino.
Desamparados architecture was designed by Peruvian architect Rafael Marquina. Desamparados is the first building in Peru to apply the steel frame technique in the construction process. The building design combines the typical details found in buildings in Paris, such as the Art Nouveau architectural style found on the skylights, the poles decorated in a neo-classical style, and building materials made of iron.
In 2009, the train station was renamed “Casa de la Literatura Peruana” (House of Peruvian Literature). Today Desamparados is home to literary books written by Peruvian authors. In addition, this place is also home to a Cultural Center, a children’s reading room, art exhibitions, and a library.
